“It’s very important that every movie I do makes money, because I want the people that had the faith in me to get their money back.”

– Quentin Tarantino

Film Finance

Bullish Film Fund is a pool of capital managed like a hedge fund.  Our goal is to generate a 20-30% annual return, which will be invested into feature projects.  With a fund cap of $100M, a 30% annual return would mean up to $30M per year invested into films with budgets up to $5M each.  As the financier, fund investors will receive back 120% of the the film’s financing before any revenue is split with the production members.

Film Production

We’re taking a play from the original Blumhouse playbook.  We keep productions to about 20 days, we keep locations to a minimum (if you can shoot in one house for 90% of the scenes, that’s what we’re looking for), don’t have a huge cast, and we’re trying really hard not to blow stuff up or fix it in post.

If you’re a seasoned producer/director, and you have a film project that meets our criteria already packaged, we’d like to hear from you.  We are open to looking at scripts, but the less time and energy we have to put into it, the better.  Loyalty is huge for us, so once we establish a relationship with you, we hope this can be a long term working relationship.  Even if we only make one movie together, I hope this helps your career, and we part with mutual respect and well wishes.

Film Equity

A common practice is for a production company to try to get as little equity from investors as possible, and to retain as much ownership for themselves as possible.  They may take loans against any pre-sales, or tax credits/rebates, or any other deals, pushing the people who invested their hard earned money to the bottom of the financial waterfall.  Plus the carrying cost of those loans also pushes breakeven even higher.

In our model, we’re 100% equity- no loans, no carrying costs, and any rebates, product placements, sponsorships, or credits, which could take a year or more to come in, go directly back the investors or get split with equity holders when they come in, if investors have already recouped their investment.

We ask a lot from everyone involved, however our model allows for a higher backend to go to everyone involved as well.  If you’re willing to forego your usual upfront salary, you could make way more by taking points.  That’s our goal – for everyone to make significant money if the film does well, and if the film doesn’t do well, no one is left holding the bag.

When we’re making a movie, I want people to be there because they want to be there; because they believe in the project.  Not just for a paycheck.  We’ll never go below standard rates, and we want everyone to feel like we’re treating them fairly.

Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.”
