Bullish Film Fund

“We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make movies.”

“I want to invest in movies, but I don’t want to lose all my money.”

– Every Film Investor Ever

Our Approach

Instead of investing directly into films, we manage our pool of capital as a hedge fund, grow the fund to the best of our ability, and only invest fund profits into film projects.

You can see our backtested methodology and fund returns here

Our goal is to blend the Silver Screen Partners movies from the 80’s and 90’s (PRETTY WOMAN, ENCINO MAN, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING, etc) with the Bulumhouse business/production model of the 2010’s.

Right now, we are happy to meet with qualified investors who want to invest in film projects.

We also work with filmmakers on projects that align with our values and can be produced within our production structure.  Once the fund is capitalized over $25M, we will start accepting pitches for projects.

Qualified Investors

Who doesn’t want to be involved in a successful film?  To tell your friends you’re a film investor?  They talk about buying gold or the latest hot stock, and you pull up pictures of yourself on set, smiling next to an actor they recognize from that movie, the title of which they can’t remember.

Most film investors invest in one film or a slate of films, with a passionate filmmaker, who does his/her best to make a great movie.  Then you hope the movie gets picked up by a distributor through a film festival, and if the movie makes 3x-4x the budget, you’ll see some sort of return on your investment.

But what if you could invest in a hedge fund that only invests fund profits into film projects? You invest once, and the Fund could finance multiple movies this year, next year, and continue in perpetuity, without any additional capital.  The fund is a goose that lays golden eggs, and you use the golden eggs to make movies.

Bullish Film Fund

We use our proprietary trading strategy to actively manage risk and take advantage of swings in market momentum in an effort to achieve greater than market average returns.  We don’t set it and forget it like traditional advisors; we’re actively monitoring the market every day, and making any necessary changes to the portfolio.

The Fund’s goal is 20-30% return per year, and any returns beyond the targeted 30% will be split between investors and fund management.

As in life and any other investment, there are no guarantees.  There is always risk.  We manage risk by limiting downside loses for each position and exposing our positions to unlimited potential upside.  Obviously not every trade is profitable, but over time, the wins historically have outweighed the losses.

This is very similar to how we approach the films we produce – limited downside, unlimited upside, and over time we anticipate greater than average returns.

Filmmakers

The Fund finances feature films and limited new/alternative media projects in accordance with our criteria.  Our goal is 2-10 films per year in the $2-5M budget range.  We will also consider allocating smaller budgets to smaller, yet still viable projects.

We’re seeking projects with limited locations, limited main characters, and limited special effects.

We take advantage of tax credits and rebates if available, but we also hope to keep productions in California and support local Los Angeles crews and vendors.  We will shoot outside California if it makes sense to the story, and/or if there’s a drastic difference in cost.

As fiduciaries, we have to balance our desire to film in L.A. with our responsibility to protect our investors’ money.
